IMPRESSIONS ON WOOD

Impressions on Wood presents original acrylic paintings created on canvas permanently mounted onto a 6 mm board made from natural hardwood. Each work is set within an integrated pinewood frame approximately 3 cm wide, hand-painted by the artist and treated as part of the composition rather than as a separate decorative addition.

In this series, Mathias explores a more impressionistic approach, allowing colour, light and atmosphere to lead the image. Amsterdam canals, Dutch landscapes, flowers and familiar scenes are interpreted through layered paint, visible brushwork and painterly texture, with forms remaining recognisable yet softened by movement, mood and personal perception.

The natural wooden support gives the paintings a firm and durable structure, while the integrated frame reinforces their object-like presence. The painted surface may extend irregularly onto the frame, deliberately softening the boundary between image and surround. As a result, each artwork becomes a complete and inseparable whole — an original hand-painted piece, ready to hang and finished as one unified composition.
